BOOKMAKER COMPARISON

Odds Comparison: Compare Bookmakers on Equal Terms

Compare bookmaker odds fairly by aligning markets, timestamps and settlement rules, then distinguish the best price from genuine value.

OddsTips Editorial Team4 min read

Odds comparison puts prices from different bookmakers side by side. For analysis, the important question is whether those prices describe the same event, selection, line and moment. A larger decimal number offers a higher return for a winning selection, but it does not establish that the selection is good value.

Define one comparable selection

Match the sport, competition, participants, start time, market period, outcome and settlement rules. In football, a 90-minute home win is different from a team to qualify. In basketball, whether overtime counts matters. For handicaps and totals, keep the line alongside the price.

Use recorded timestamps where available. A bookmaker quote captured at noon and another taken after the starting line-ups are announced cannot isolate a difference between bookmakers: time and new information also changed.

A worked price comparison

Suppose three hypothetical bookmakers offer 2.00, 2.06 and 2.10 for the same selection at the same time. The last price offers 5% more gross return than 2.00: 2.10 ÷ 2.00 − 1. With one unit staked, a winning selection returns 2.10 units rather than 2.00.

Its break-even probability is 1 ÷ 2.10 = 47.62%. If a credible independent estimate is only 45%, the highest price in the comparison still has negative estimated expected value. “Best available” and “fair” answer different questions.

Do not manufacture one bookmaker's margin

The highest home, draw and away prices may come from three different bookmakers. Their combined implied probabilities describe a synthetic best-price set. They are not the overround of any one bookmaker. Calculate market margin from a complete, consistent price set when studying a source's pricing.

Historical best prices need extra care

A recorded high price is not proof that it was available to every user at a meaningful stake. Missing timestamps, brief quotes and suspended selections can affect a comparison. Avoid filling missing prices with another bookmaker's later quote without marking the substitution.

The Football-Data field dictionary distinguishes bookmaker-specific odds from market averages and maxima. Preserve that distinction in your own research tables.
