Betting odds analysis means studying market prices as evidence: what probability a price implies, how that price changes, and how it compares with relevant historical results. It is a research process, not a way to read a certain outcome from a number.
Read decimal odds correctly
A decimal price of 2.40 returns 2.40 units for each unit staked if the selection wins, including the original stake. The raw implied probability is 1 ÷ 2.40, or 41.67%. This is a conversion of the offered price. It is not an independently measured chance of winning.

Separate three questions
- Price: what is offered for this exact selection at this time?
- Evidence: what do comparable matches and information available now suggest?
- Uncertainty: how much could the estimate change if the sample or assumptions change?
A hypothetical model might estimate a 45% chance for an outcome priced at 2.40. Its estimated expected return would be 0.45 × 2.40 − 1 = 8% per unit staked. If the actual probability were 40%, the same calculation becomes −4%. The apparent edge depends on the probability estimate being reliable.
Build a repeatable review
Choose one sport and one market definition. Fix the bookmaker and observation time. Review the complete price set, find a relevant historical sample, and record why you included those matches. Add only information that was available before the decision being studied.
Track all qualifying observations, including failed ideas and incomplete records. A win rate without sample size, prices and selection rules cannot establish the quality of a method. Use a later, untouched sample to check whether a pattern survives outside the data used to discover it.
Where software helps
Software can make filtering, comparison and record keeping faster. It cannot resolve missing evidence or remove uncertainty.
